Grand Ole Opry Celebrates 100 Years with Star-Studded Event in Nashville
One of the most significant milestones in country music history is taking place in Nashville, as the Grand Ole Opry marks its 100th birthday. The Opry 100 celebration brought together nearly 40 of country music’s biggest stars, many of whom are proud members of this iconic institution. Among the honored guests was Alan Jackson, a country legend who has been closely tied to the Opry for decades.
Alan Jackson first stepped into the spotlight at the Opry in 1990, performing “Here In The Real World,” the title track from his debut album. Just a year later, he was invited to officially join the Opry family, an honor he shared with Roy Acuff and Randy Travis during his induction in 1991. Reflecting on the honor, Jackson recalled his humble beginnings, saying, “Hard to believe 6 years ago I was carrying a bucket of mail over there every day for about $5 an hour.”
In an emotional moment on Nashville Now, Jackson expressed his pride and excitement, sharing, “It’s an honor. I’m really proud because it’s a great institution. I don’t know if country music would exist without it.” He added that he almost became emotional when joining the Opry, acknowledging the greats who had stood on that legendary wooden circle before him, including Roy Acuff and Hank Williams.
As part of the Opry 100 celebration, Alan Jackson returned to the stage to perform his 1992 hit, “Chattahoochee.” This song, which became one of his signature tracks, was released as the third single from his 1992 album, A Lot About Livin’ (And A Little ‘Bout Love). The track has since become a fan favorite, and Jackson shared the story behind it, revealing how he and Jim McBride came up with the line “way down yonder on the Chattahoochee,” never imagining it would become such a huge hit.
Jackson’s performance at the Opry 100 celebration was particularly poignant, as he is making fewer public appearances, focusing on his final concert tour. His return to the Opry stage was a heartfelt tribute to the institution that played such a pivotal role in his career.
